In recent issues, there has been some discussion of the AAUP and its "blacklist." In this issue, we reproduce (with permission) some comments from Don Lewis which were sent to one of the editorial board. However, other than that, the submissions have been weak this week. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a graduate student (me) has served as the monthly editor, and I'd like to take advantage of that situation to invite conversation about concerns of young soon-to-be-mathematicians, i.e. graduate students. For example, this is a time of year when many graduate students are anxiously awaiting replies to the reams of job applications they sent out earlier in the year. Are there things which you have learned in the process that you are willing to pass on to next year's class? Do you have particular suggestions for humanizing the job search? On a different note, many of you have jobs and are busy in the process of trying to get published. Are there things you wished you had learned or done in grad school which might have made that process easier? Or, perhaps you have some comments about the state of graduate-level mathematics education. In asking these questions, I am only trying to prompt some discussion, and not trying to steer it in one direction in exclusion of another. Of course, we'll welcome any and all comments you may have about any of the other topics we've been discussing, as well. I look forward to reading your comments. Jeff Adams adams@bright.uoregon.edu April Editor, Concerns of Young Mathematicians _______________________________________________________________ Item #2 About the AAUP Blacklist By Don Lewis [The following is an extract from a letter written by Don Lewis to one of the YMN board members. It is a followup to some of the recent discussion in this forum on unethical hiring practices by universities. -ed] You will find a full desription of why an institution is put on the AAUP blacklist in the issue preceeding the annual meeting at which the institution was voted to be placed on the list. I think you miss the real role of AAUP. From my perspective it is its mediating role in resolving disputes. It is best if this is done by the local chapters leadership group, but if they are uninterested an individual can contact the Washington office. That office will at least provide the individiual with guidance as to whether they have any case and if there is one how to begin to proceed. Each University has an internal grievance procedure which must be exhausted before the National [chapter] will get actively involved. But my experience is that they will give advice from the start, although they prefer the local [chapter] to do the initial work. Don Lewis _______________________________________________________________ Item #3 Addition to the Grant Proposal Archive Another grant proposal has been added to the YMN archive. We are archiving grant proposals for the use of anyone who might want to look at other proposals while writing his or her own. This requires that people donate their proposals (which can be first be made anonymous, of course). If you're willing to do this, contact Curtis Bennett. ____________________________________________________________________ Item #3 Closing Credits The Young Mathematicians' Network is administered by: Charles Yeomans cyeomans@s.ms.uky.edu Mark Winstead winstead@euclid.ucsd.edu Vic Perera vperera@silver.ucs.indiana.edu Franklin Mendivil mendivil@math.gatech.edu Stephen Kennedy kennedy@stolaf.edu Kalin Godev kalin@math.psu.edu Neil Calkin calkin@math.gatech.edu Curtis Bennett cbennet@andy.bgsu.edu Jeff Adams adams@bright.uoregon.edu Edward Aboufadel aboufade@scus1.ctstateu.edu Frank Arlinghaus frank@math.ysu.edu Matt Hudelson hudelson@math.washington.edu ____________________________________________________________________________ End of Journal
