Gathering useful math links Diaries

I've been contemplating gathering and placing useful "math on the web" type links somewhere on the scoop site. Of course we could do this in an article, but I think it might be good to organize a handfull into a small "toolbar" box on the left hand side similar to the YMN box, maybe have a few catagories such as
  • orginations
    • AMS - maybe also with links to employment stuff?
    • MAA - maybe also link directly to things like MathTrecks?
    • SIAM
    • AWM
    • others?
  • newsgrous (maybe via google's front end?)
    • alt.math.moderated
    • alt.math.recreational
    • alt.math.undergrad
    • sci.math
    • sci.math.research
    • others?
  • other resourse sites
    • Drexel's Math Forum
    • Marvy Mudd's Math Fun Facts
    • math puzzle sites (e.g. I believe Macalester College has something)
    • MathDL
    • PlanetMath
    • MSRI publications/lectuers
    • http://mathpuzzle.com/
    • mathworld
    • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics
    • others?

by overconvergent on Fri Feb 27, 2004 at 05:32:52 PM PDT

Mathbooks online - has reviews, etc.

Zentralblatt - like MathSciNet, a database of reviews of articles.

European Mathematical Society - for those of us not in the USA :)

Mathematical Quotations Server - excellent for sig file quotes.

The Mathematics Genealogy Project - trace your mathematical ancestry.

Useful if you're a number theorist.

[new] Different links for the various sections (none / 0) (#3)
by jvano on Fri Nov 12, 2004 at 02:41:58 PM PDT

To imporve the site I am looking to add a short list of links on the left, with different links for each section.

My thinking is that these links should link to important resources that are connected with the various section (e.g. for the news section have link to the news pages on the MAA, AMS, SIAM, etc sites) or the links should be places where there are regular stories which pertain to that section.

I'm going to try to organize determine what links to put in each section by using the threaded nature of comments.  So I'm going make a reply to this comment for each of our current sections:

Front Page, News, Grad Life, Undergrad Life, Job Search, Career, Work & Family, Teaching, Research, Diaries, Misc, Paths to Math, All

and then under these comments add each potential link for that section as a comment (by keeping each link a seperate comment in theory we could use the rating mechanism to determine which order the links should appear)...

Okay, so lets see how this goes...
